NYO GIRLS BASKETBALL
At NYO, we strive to provide the best possible recreational sports programming while supporting the mission of the park by emphasizing character development and sportsmanship. We are blessed to be able to offer the only fall rec basketball league of its size and kind in the Metro-Atlanta area.
This program operates grade-based leagues for 4th through 10th graders that build off of our introductory developmental league for 2nd and 3rd grade girls. With a focus on TEAM basketball and skill development, the leagues are structured so that teams are balanced, and players receive sound fundamental instruction and substantial playing time in a competitive and organized learning environment. The program traditionally serves around 250 players from over 30 schools and is designed to accommodate girls that also play another fall sport.
Each league follows age appropriate basketball skill and concept development guidelines in order to instill in our players the path to become the ultimate teammate that is fundamentally sound and ready to ‘play ball.’ Each league concludes by the last week of October. Columbus Day weekend has no league events scheduled, but NYO offers additional clinics for those who would like to continue to develop their game during the holiday.
DEVELOPMENTAL LEAGUE – Beginning 2nd and 3rd graders
ROOKIE LEAGUE – 4th and advanced 3rd graders
VARSITY LEAGUE – 5th and advanced 4th graders
NIT LEAGUE – 6th and advanced 5th graders
NCAA LEAGUE – 7th and 8th graders and advanced 6th graders
WNBA LEAGUE – 9th and 10th graders and advanced 8th graders
EURO LEAGUE – New “game only” league for local high school teams. Games played on Saturdays.
The NYO Developmental league is open to girls who are in 2nd or 3rd grade and beginning to play. The objective of this league is to take a beginner player and provide them with the proper introduction to the sport, instill a basic fundamental skill base and general understanding of the sport. Each participant will receive a basketball and uniform.
At a minimum, half of each session will consist of skill development building up to small sided games. The season events are on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings.
The Rookie League is designed for our 4th and advanced 3rd graders to continue the fundamental focus of our Developmental league. These players get together in the gym the first three weeks of the season for skill training and small sided games. At this point, balanced teams are made and season is played and concludes with a championship. This league averages 3 events a week and every player will play at least one half of each game.
The VARSITY league is where our 5th graders and high level 4th graders come to compete in the gym roughly 3 times a week for practices and games after balanced teams are designated. This league competes on age appropriate basket heights and with game rules to continue to develop fundamentally sound players as they progress through the program. The season runs from late August through the end of October and finishes with an exciting single-elimination tournament.
The NIT league is designed to provide our 6th graders and advanced 5th graders who are looking for a competitive on-the-court experience with a season that will help them improve and enhance their skills in game situations. The teams in this league are formed after evaluations and average up to 3 events per week (practices and/or games) running through the end of October where a single elimination tournament crowns the season champion.
This new league is designed to develop the game of 7th and 8th graders as well as advanced 6th graders in preparation for their Middle School tryouts.
Skill development is still the foundation of this league and the rules provide the opportunity of added situational complexity to grow the players whole game IQ. Teams are formed after evaluations to establish parity across the league for competition through the season leading up to a single elimination tournament.
The WNBA league is now focusing on High Schoolers and advanced 8th graders to provide a high level of game experience and skill development to get them prepared for their High School basketball team tryouts. In this environment our players are given the opportunity to increase their individual skills and whole game IQ through healthy competition.
