2021 NYO Softball Awards

Parents/Players/Coaches-

On Tuesday evening, NYO Softball presented its annual awards and recognitions in advance of the park All-Star games.  Always one of the most exciting nights to be at the park, the 2021 version did not disappoint.  First, Positive Coaching Awards were presented in each league as follows:

-Jansen Bailey (Kit Kats)
-Austin McDonald (Rookies)
-Brad Glenn (Minors)
-Stan Jones (Majors)
-Peter Wurm (Seniors)

Congratulations to each of these coaches for all of their outstanding work this season!

We were also really excited to recognize the nine 12th graders from our Senior League this season who will be headed to college this fall.  By far the largest class of graduating seniors in one year at NYO Softball, these outstanding young women have had a tremendous impact on our program through their great play, leadership and positivity.  The 2021 graduating NYO Softball players are:

-Caroline Banks (Marist to Montana State)
-Katherine Davis (North Springs to UGA)
-Maddy Djuric (Marist to Virginia Tech)
-Jamie Kornheiser (Pace to Washington University in St. Louis)
-Emily McGreevey (North Atlanta to the University of Utah)
-Mary Cannon Morris (North Atlanta to the University of Tennessee)
-Dani Nicholas (North Springs to Georgia Tech)
-Sydney Silverstein (Pace to Denison University)
-Allie Weinstein (Woodward to the University of Indiana)

It was our honor to have these girls as a part of our program this year and in previous years.  See the attached photo of this special group!

Finally, each year NYO Softball presents the Chris Deisley Award in rememberance of Chris, a lifelong NYO Softball volunteer (as a parent, coach, league director and assistant commissioner) who passed away in 2015, to honor a player who exemplifies character, sportsmanship and leadership at NYO Softball.  For this year, NYO Softball presented two awards (in part, because we missed the opportunity last season).  The first winner was Dani Nicholas from North Spring High School.  Dani is a player universally loved and respected by her teammates, coaches, opponents and umpires at NYO Softball.  She plays hard, has fun, and always has a smile on her face.  It has been a privilege to have Dani be part of our program and to represent NYO Softball.  The second winner was Sydney Silverstein from Pace Academy.  Although Syd is one of the best players ever to come through our program (she will be pitching for Denison University in Ohio starting this fall), it is her support for her teammates and for the NYO Softball program that is the greatest thing about her.  During her many years at NYO Softball, she has been a coach, assistant coach, youth umpire, volunteer instructor and head cheerleader for her team (when she was injured and unable to play).  She is a deserving recipient of the Chris Deisley Award based upon her character, leadership and sportsmanship.  See the attached photo, which includes Chris' wife Laura Deisley, Brian and Colette Steel (representing past winner Bari Steel (University of Maryland)), past winners Emily Pearson (UGA), Hannah Lariscy (Georgia Tech), Maddy Djuric (Marist High), and this year's winners Dani Nicholas and Sydney Silverstein.  Thanks to Laura, the Steels and the past winners for attending the ceremony and thanks to Dani and Syd for all they have meant to our program.

As we wrap up the 2021 NYO Softball season, we would be remiss without thanking Executive Director Josh Burr and Board Vice-President Larry Bennett for their tireless efforts to insure we could have a season this year at NYO.  We also could not have pulled the season off without our outstanding NYO Softball Parents Auxiliary Coordinators Stephanie Roads and Kathryn Smith.  Last, we'd like to thank every one of you--parents, coaches and volunteers.  We have the best group of volunteers anywhere at NYO, and every single one of you plays a huge role in providing an environment where these girls can participate in a team sport and grow not just as players but as young women.  We appreciate all of you so much.  Thank you for this season, and we hope to see everyone soon at NYO Fall Softball (registration is open now!) and again next spring!
