3 good shots at the basket just rimmed out for the Michael Chiok coached Deacons in the last 12 seconds as the Bob Goldberg coached Frogs hung on for a 39-36 victory to take the NYO majors tournament championship. Hudson Tittle, who paced the Frogs with 17 points, calmly sank 2 free throws with .9 seconds left to provide the final 3 point margin for the Frogs, sealing the win. It was a noteworthy game in NYO history as both teams came into the game undefeated, their regular season game having been cancelled.
The game was remarkably close throughout, in the battle of well-coached teams. The game was tied 19-19 at the half and the Deacons went into the 4th quarter with a slim 1-point margin.
The Deacons, behind clever, strong drives to the basket by Dylan Chiok and Charlie Sprinkle, opened an early 6-point margin in the game, but the Frogs relentless press forced key turnovers and led to some baskets from Will Goldberg that evened the score.
Deacons point guard Christopher Kuzniak carried the Deacons in the exciting 3rd quarter with 8 points in the quarter alone, drilling back to back 3’s at a crucial point in the quarter. The Frogs had an answer of their own in the 4th quarter, as Tyler Baradel scored 8 for the Frogs in that quarter with effective mid-range jump shots that never missed the mark.
It was a great end of the season as the 2 best teams went at it non-stop for 32 minutes of pure hustle, grit and determination. 20 kids played hard in the game, and 20 kids left the floor spent and hopefully proud of their effort. It was an honorable wrap to a dramatic and different season of NYO basketball.
