Thinking about registering for the 2014 Cheerleading Season?  Here are a couple of our most frequently asked questions…

How much is Registration?

The cost of registration is $315.  This cost includes a uniform with the exception of shoes.  Team dues are additional and usually run between $40 - $60 per Cheerleader.

*Scholarships are available.  Please email me directly to inquire

What are the age requirements?

Your Cheerleader must be 7 yrs old by August 1st 2014 and no older than 12 yrs old.

Who do they cheer for?

NYO Cheerleaders cheer for our "Bigs" league.  This league is for players ages 11 - 12.  In the future we would like to add Cheerleaders for the other leagues however, space to accommodate cheerleaders on the "Pee-Wee" and "Littles" field is limited. There are 10 teams in the Bigs league and each squad will have up to 12 Cheerleaders.

Does my Cheerleader need experience?

No.  We have beginners, experienced cheerleaders and all stages in between.

Will there be Junior Cheerleaders?

No.  There will not be any junior cheerleaders this year.  The games are starting much later (6:15pm and 7:15pm) and it’s proven to be too late for our 5 and 6 year olds.

Will my Cheerleader be on a squad with all of her friends?

Squad assignments take place after the football draft is complete to ensure siblings of the players are given first priority and placed on a squad cheering for their brother.  Each Cheerleader will have the opportunity to make one friend request at the time of registration.  We will do everything we can to accommodate friend requests.

Who will coach their squad?

EVERY sport at NYO is coached by a volunteer.  There are no paid positions for coaching.  We welcome volunteers who are willing to spend time with the girls to increase their self-confidence, develop team building skills, sportsmanship and discipline.  No experience is necessary and there is a coaching and team mom clinic before the season begins.

How many practices and games will there be each week?

You can count on three events per week.  Usually the week is made up of two practices and one game (there can be two games in one week if there is a make-up game).

Where are the games and practices held?

All games are held at NYO.  Practices are held at NYO, Jackson Elementary's primary campus, Chastain Park, or another location decided upon by the individual squad.

When does practice usually start and how long are the games?

Practice usually starts at 5pm or later.  This gives our girls the opportunity to participate in any after school activities.  Practices usually last an hour to two hours depending on how much is needed.  Generally practices are longer at the beginning of the season as the girls get to know each other and learn cheers and stunts.  They are also longer at the end of the season in order to prepare for the Cheer Off.  Games in the Bigs league are usually an hour and a half.

Are the girls required to be at all practices and games?

Yes.  As with any and all sports, it is important for your child to be at ALL practices unless excused.  It only takes one cheerleader being absent to mess up an entire stunt, half time routine, or cheer off practice/routine.  PLEASE note that games start at 6:15pm and 7:15pm.  ALL Cheerleaders are required to be there for the entire game.

Will the squads be broken up into ages?

No.  We try to have a good mix of all ages in each squad.  This gives the younger girls a chance to learn from the older ones, and the older girls an opportunity to teach.

Is there a refund policy?

Yes.  This will be strongly adhered to for all NYO Sports.  Refundable – Refunds are subject to a $100 cancellation fee at any time 60 days prior to the start of the first event of the season (this would be a pre-season clinic in early August).  Non-Refundable – If cancelled less than 60 days prior to the first event of the season the Registration Fee becomes Non-Refundable and has no exchange value.

How will my Cheerleader learn Cheers and Stunts?

The IN A SNAP Cheer camp this summer at NYO is a great way to get started.  *Use code nyocheer616 for $25 off registration.  Click here for Registration  There will be three pre-season clinics where the girls will learn cheers, stunts and the fundamentals of football/cheerleading.  *The clinics will be broken up into smaller groups than in seasons past.  There will also be ongoing instruction throughout the season.

What is the Cheer-Off?

This is a competition that takes place at the end of the season before playoffs.  Each squad performs a routine that combines dancing, cheering and stunting.  The judges for this competition have no affiliation with NYO or the players and coaches.

What is All-Stars?

At the end of the season two Cheerleaders are selected based on merit, leadership and their commitment throughout the season to cheer for the championship game.

Is there an orientation?

Yes, and attendance is strongly encouraged.  This is where expectations for the season will be set and a Q&A is held.
