CAUTION:
PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS UNDERWAY (posted 3/7/10)
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot. - Joni Mitchell, 1970
In case you're wondering what we're up to now at the park, we're using the reduced week of activity at the park to undertake a long overdue and much anticipated repaving and striping of the main parking lot at the park. We finally have the lot in shape to move forward with this exciting project. If all goes as planned, all improvements will be completed by March 13. During the week of construction, there should be plenty of space in the lot to park as the contractor we'll be staging the work. However, if things get overcrowded, we appreciate your patience and willingness to take a little extra walk to get to your field for practice. This will be a major improvement to the park and should improve traffic flow dramatically. Once the striping is done, we would request that everyone follow the traffic flow signs and only park in designated areas for everyone's benefit (and to provide access for emergency vehicles). We'll send out a master blast and post updates here in the event the work is still underway when games start up. Thanks, NYO Sports

The Calm Before the Storm (a/k/a the week before the season starts) (posted 3/7/10)
We are now rolling towards the start of games in all leagues. We'll be jump starting things in the kid pitch leagues with games starting the week of March 15. Then on March 20, we'll have our traditional opening day with games starting up in the coach pitch and tee ball leagues and, of course, our big opening day parade for teams and kids in Rookie, Shetland Red, Shetland Blue and Small Ball (along with the softball Rookie and Kit Kat teams and the Christopher League).
The numbers this year are somewhat staggering. It will be another record year for us with 1,422 players league spread across 110 teams playing 880 games. Take a deep breath, as once we start up next week, it will be flurry of activity over about a 10 week span. Thanks to all of our hard working volunteers for their work to date in getting the league up to speed and in advance for all the work to come this spring.
Be sure to always check this web site for weather updates in the event of inclement weather. We will do our best to provide updates on this site, but when in doubt, assume your game or practice is going forward unless you hear from your coach.
All game schedules are now posted on this site in all leagues and teams are finalizing selections for in season practices. Thanks to those with Sarah Smith practices for their patience as the city completes their improvements at the school - the net result should be a major upgrade in access and parking. And the new and improved parking lot at the park should be a dramatic improvement and stress reliever.
We're looking forward to a great season and sincerely appreicate everyone's support and enthusiasm for the program. Play Ball! |

AAA Wolfpack finish with 15-1 record to take AAA Championship The AAA Basketball tournament concluded with the regular season champion Wolfpack outpacing the #2 seed Tigers (12-4) by a final score of 31 to 16.
The Championship game paired the league's top scoring Wolfpack attack (led by Cole Smith, Riley Levitt and Wyatt Williams) against the league's top ranked Tiger defense. The pre-game tension was high as the Tigers had handed the Wolfpack their only loss in a thrilling 44-42 contest where Barrett Baker's buzzer beater put the Tigers on top!
The stage was set for another offensive shootout but each team's defenses took control in a Championship game where the game's high scorer was held to a tough 7 points (Cole Smith). Intensity was high in the first half as both teams challenged every shot, fought for every rebound and hit the floor for every loose ball, resulting in an ugly halftime score of 12 to 7 in favor of the Wolfpack.
The Wolfpack maintained their defense edge throughout the second half holding the Tigers to only 9 more points. When Joe Oliver drove left and converted a tough 3rd quarter jump shot, the tide began to turn for the Wolfpack. The Wolfpack pulled away in the second half with balanced team scoring led by 6 fourth quarter points from Wyatt Williams and efficient clock management by Riley Levitt and Cole Smith. Every player on the Wolfpack scored in a total team effort. Drew DeHaven, Brickie Bills, Benjamin Maitski, Jack Tinkler and Joe Oliver all contributed to the Wolfpack win offensively and with exceptional defensive effort. The Wolfpack were coached this season by Steve Williams and Scott Levitt.
Barrett Baker scored 6 points to lead a Tigers team that included Sammy Tannenblatt, Lauren Hadley, Max Coffin, Hayden Piovesan, Roberto Goizueta, Christopher Rex and Ryan Schimpf. The Tiger's played hard to the final buzzer and played well all season under the coaching of Dr. Mary Burns and Curtis Baker

Irish Capture Rookie Basketball Championship In Rousing Final
Head coach, David Greene, fresh off his selection as the NYO Rookie Coach of the Year, and assistant coach, Matt Davis, had a plan to ensure that the NYO Rookie Irish would win the championship at the end of the season. Well, maybe they didn't have a plan, as much as they just thought it would be fun for all involved. After a season of highs and lows, the Irish faced off against the talented Rookie Trojans in the championship game that at times was fast paced and at times a bit slow.
The always tough Irish defense held the Trojans to just 6 first half points. The tenacious Irish "D" was led by Grayson Bills, Brady Vincent and Marcus Lewinstein.
Inspired by the unveiling of a memorial to NYO's dear friend, the late James Armstrong, the potent Irish offense ignited in the second half.
Lance Beck repeatedly drove to the basket, and Will Smith had several timely second chance shots as the Irish outscored the Trojans 18 to 4 in the second half. Casey Levy and David Greene dominated the boards on both ends to limit the Trojans. Lastly, Mathew Davis had several key steals late in the game to seal the victory for the Irish.
As the 2009 basketball season winds down and baseball season slowly begins, the Irish would like to thank both coaches and parents for their commitment and a memorable season. (submitted by Jeter, 2-22

L to R: Coach Tim Goodwin, Gregory Rogers, Cade Thomas, Walker
Espy, Drayton Foster, Robert Espy, David Vroon, Michael McCarthy, Will Goodwin, Coach Jim McCarthy. |
The AA Basketball tournament concluded with a thrillingly tight contest between the feisty Fighting Irish against the regular season champions and undefeated Deacons. The Irish were coached by Jim McCarthy and Tim Goodwin while the Deacons were coached by the perennial favorite Cal Boyd.
The Irish took the air out of the ball to help slow the pace against a lethal trapping Deacon defense. The Irish, led by center Gregory Rogers and point guard David Vroon, were able to climb back from an early deficit to start the fourth quarter tied with the favored Deacons.
The Deacons, led by Coleman Boyd and Crawford Schwieger, traded baskets with the Irish for numerous lead changes. The Irish defense, lead by Drayton Foster, Robert Espy, Walker Espy, Will Goodwin and Cade Thomas, withstood the tough transition pressure by the Deacons’ offensive threats of Ben and Tyler Isreal, Andrew Lingle and Wilson Cherry. Vroon numerously escaped a furious Deacon trap and was able to attack the basket twisting through the Deacon defenders. Michael McCarthy's ball handling helped break the Deacon front court pressure to insure the upset.
The final score favored the Fighting Irish 25 to 22 as time expired.

Christopher League - 2010 Spring Season |
|
The planning has commenced for the 2010 Christopher League Spring Season. While the schedule is not yet finalized, the season will likely start March 13 and have 8 scheduled games through May 15. We will have 2 away games and 6 home games (2 of the home games will be against visiting teams). All home games will be from 9:00 to 10:30 on Saturdays at the Bronco Field.
For the uninitiated, the Christopher League is a baseball program for players of various abilities who are not equipped to play in NYO's baseball or softball programs. The players are assisted in the games by volunteer buddies. Typically, we have about 20 players on the NYO teams and any number of buddies. We have no age requirement for players. Most of our buddies are 11 years old and up and come from the NYO baseball program, softball program and surrounding community.
